My son is now 4 years old (where does the time go?) and I’ve been thinking back recently to our experiences with plagiocephaly and brachycephaly when he was just an infant.
In our case, we ended up going with the helmet as a last resort after we had tried physical therapy and repositioning without success. He was 9 months old when he started wearing the helmet, and wore it until he turned one.
Looking back we have no regrets at all on our decision. Of course we can’t say for sure that the helmet was what made the difference for him, but I do know that for many months he had no improvement at all, and then during the three month period he wore the helmet his head shape changed quite dramatically.
His head shape is still not completely “normal” in terms of ideal measurements (although I don’t even know what normal is these days – kids seem to have heads in so many different shapes!), but he certainly looks normal and I’m sure that no one would ever suspect he had plagio and brachy. His head is slightly rounder rather than more oval (looking from above), but there are no flat spots.
You can get a pretty good idea of how his head looks now in this video from his 4th birthday party.
